Pendrith Claims First PGA Tour Victory in Dramatic Finish at Byron Nelson

Canadian golfer Taylor Pendrith secured his maiden PGA Tour win in a thrilling final round at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. While Ben Kohles held the lead heading into the 18th, a disastrous final shot sent victory Pendrith's way.

Pendrith remained focused despite Kohles' birdies on 16 and 17, even preparing for a potential playoff eagle putt. However, Kohles' second shot on 18 landed in rough, leading to a bogey after a series of challenging chips and a missed 6-foot putt. This dramatic collapse handed Pendrith a surprising 3-foot birdie putt to seal the win.

Pendrith finished the tournament at 23-under par with a 4-under 67 final round score. Kohles, playing just north of his birthplace, finished a stroke back at 22-under after shooting 66. Both players secured entry into the upcoming Wells Fargo Championship.

Swedish golfer Alex Noren, also seeking his first PGA Tour win, finished alone in third at 21-under, showcasing an impressive near-eagle shot on the 17th. Other notable contenders included Aaron Rai, Matt Wallace, S.H. Kim, and Byeong Hun An, all finishing within two strokes of Pendrith.

The final round saw Pendrith and Kohles trade the lead throughout the day, with Pendrith's clutch par putt on 17 proving pivotal. This victory grants Pendrith entry into the PGA Championship and next year's Masters, along with the next three $20 million signature events.

With the upcoming major and Wells Fargo Championship, a limited field of only three top 30 world-ranked golfers participated in the Byron Nelson. Notably, Jordan Spieth missed the cut, while defending champion Jason Day and rising star Tom Kim didn't contend.

Second-round leader Jake Knapp, a former security guard, finished at 19-under, while Matt Wallace was the only other player in the top eight with a prior PGA Tour win. Rain delays impacted the start of the final round, leading to threesomes playing with lifted, cleaned, and placed shots in the fairways.

Other noteworthy performances included Rafael Campos' impressive 63 after five birdies on the first six holes and Taiga Semikawa's solid showing at 18-under. Kris Kim, a 16-year-old amateur, had a challenging final nine with four bogeys, marking the youngest player to participate in a final round on the PGA Tour in a decade.
